This short film was created by General Motors to promote its Highways and Horizons exhibit at the 1939 New York World’s Fair. The exhibit, which included the popular Futurama feature, gave visitors a glimpse of what the designers predicted the world of 1960 might be like. The ride itself transported people seated in moving chairs above a series of futuristic scenes, which included farmland and a vast riverside city, complete with automated highways and a dirigible port. Participants were given a button as they emerged from the exhibit that proudly proclaimed, “I have seen the future”. It is interesting to note that 1939 was also the year World War II began, which brought doubt and pessimism about the future.
